Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic

About Lyndhurst Chiropractic Clinic Contact Information and Map

Here are some of the questions we are frequently asked. However, if they do not answer your personal concerns please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

  1. Will I receive treatment on the first visit?
  2. If appropriate, treatment will begin on the first visit. In some instances X-Rays or MRI scans will be required prior to treatment commencing.
  3. How long does the treatment take?
  4. The first consultation takes, on average, about an hour, and a treatment session about 15 minutes, but this will vary according to your condition and your needs.
  5. How much does it cost?
  6. A new patient appointment is £60 and subsequent treatment is £40 per visit.
  7. How long will it take to get better?
  8. Your recovery is dependent on many factors – the problem, the length of time you have had it and your own commitment to any rehabilitation exercises and maintenance visits which your chiropractor may recommend. For the more simple cases, results should start to be seen after a few visits. For more complicated cases this may take five or six visits. You will be advised as to what to expect and whether your condition requires long term care.
  9. Do I have to be referred by my GP?
  10. No, your GP does not have to refer you to us as we are a private clinic but you should feel able to discuss your condition and treatment options with your GP. The Royal College of General Practitioners recommend spinal manipulation in the treatment of back pain.
  11. Will you tell my GP if I come and see you?
  12. We feel that your medical records should be up to date and complete so we shall inform your GP when you undertake chiropractic care unless you ask us not to.
  13. Do I have to get undressed for treatment?
  14. Yes, we ask all patients to remove their clothing but keep their underwear on. A rear fastening hospital style gown is provided for ladies and a dressing gown is provided for all patients.
  15. If I am not sure if I should see a Chiropractor for my condition what should I do?
  16. We allow anyone to book a free, no obligation discussion. This enables us to find out if we think that chiropractic can help your condition. You get a chance to meet us and decide if you would like us to help you.
  17. What is the popping noise of the adjustment?
  18. When the two surfaces of the joint are moved apart rapidly, as happens in chiropractic adjustment, there is a change of pressure within the joint space. This may sometimes cause a bubble of gas to ‘pop’ – but this sound is not significant, and does not hurt.
  19. Will treatment hurt?
  20. Manipulation, when carried out correctly by a qualified practitioner, is not painful. If you have acute muscle spasm, when even the lightest touch hurts, there may be some discomfort. Sometimes, if you have had a problem for some time, you may feel sore whilst your body starts to adjust. Your chiropractor will tell you if this is likely to happen.
  21. Is chiropractic treatment safe?
  22. Chiropractic is remarkably safe when treatment is carried out by a properly qualified practitioner. The World Health Organization states that when "employed skilfully and appropriately, chiropractic care is safe and effective for the prevention and management of a number of health problems". The International Chiropractic Association (ICA) suggests that chiropractic is one of the safest health professions and chiropractors have some of the lowest malpractice insurance premiums in the health care industry. As with all interventions, there are risks associated with spinal manipulation.
